“Frequently asked questions from potential new user of Linux” – Real-life situation

I’ve shared my lunch yesterday in Marriot Kingstone OH, USA with my mentor “Phil Bull” and a new potential user of Linux: David Robbins. While we were waiting for the order  Dave was asking a lot of Linux questions about the advantages and disadvantages offers…  I was a little confused because I thought the #openhelp 2011 conference was focused on people who want to learn from the documentation experts team from different Open Source communities like Gnome, Fedora, Mozilla. Dave told us that he came to the event because he was interested by the name of the event and the presentations of Anna Gentle @annegentle and Jennifer Zickerman @jenzed……

Dave is a writer and has used Windows for years. Here are the principle questions and answers between Phil and Dave. (Meanwhile Dave was trying the Ubuntu and Unity distributions that Phil had installed on his computer.)

* Security Why should you have to spend on Antivirus software when I can get an free operating system that seldom has problems with viruses

* Compatibility Open source software uses open data standards, which means that the contents of files can be read by multiple programs. One person who has OpenOffice or Libre Office can read both of them plus Microsoft Word files. The PDF convert option is also available :DDD

Can I install windows applications in my Ubuntu?… well, Phil showed Dave that the WINE applications can be used on Ubuntu to run Windows programs on it… they also configured evolution in minutes…

Plus one, plus two, plus +++, plus any number you think to the n power🙂

Being familiar with… Dave started with the way to manage windows… and he have also seen that he can found all the softwares he needs in the Software Center click on “Apps…

Sometimes I use photoshop, there is another similar application?… Yes! you have Gimp!!

* Improvements, you not need to install all the drivers of every external devices like printers or cameras or whatever… Linux works plug in automatically… yeeey

* Support, I don’t know so much, so what If I need HELP…  I don’t want to be part of the geeke guys that populates on Internet… well there are a lot of manuals and specific FAQ that can help you anytime, anywhere… maybe if you  want to do something with Windows you have to wait… uhmmm this could take a long “LONG” “LONG” time…

Finally, he was wondering why do you guys do this, if you are not be paying and how do live… well Phil mentioned “boys scouts”… such group of people do thing because they believe in that so they enjoy their live sharing, teaching, discovering and all the things that being a part of any community of free software can offer… This is also a philosophy!

… The fun part of this was he yield in the middle of the conference that he installed Ubuntu alone in an hour searching and googling… everyone cheer him up… here the picture of the victory of the battle… In conclusion, like @pholymatic says YOU DON’T NEED  TO CONVINCE ANYONE, THEY HAVE JUST TO TRY IT!!

  1. Richard says:

    Running Windows software:
wine actually has issues running most software perfectly. “without any problems” is slightly misleading.
