“What did we do every day? “

1st day

2nd day

•  In the morning I cloned gnome-user-docs help because I had had formatted my laptop. Kat taught me to be more careful with words, they have to be the same as terms in GNOME established. It was defined to write the symbol + instead the word ‘plus’, and also discussed storage devices like hard disk and removable devices.
• In the afternoon we attended to the Shaun talk and continued the work for baobab, this time I was writing a new type of List I have ever used before, for protocols.
• In the evening, we bowling n.n.

3rd day

• In the morning I was testing scan remote folders with Baptista. We did scan his server using ssh or sftp in his laptop.
• In the afternoon Phil divided topics for everyone. We did a to-do list for reviewing and updating topics. Each one of us did 5 or 7 folders approximately.
• In the night Shaun invited us dinner at Magistr.

4th day

• In the morning Phil decided to make me write the whole documentation for Documents, so I created 12 new folders and did tests in WANDA, Jim’s laptop, Mike’s laptop and Cossimo’s laptop. By the way, this application is maintained by Cossimo Cicci. Phil also established groups of work, people who can write documentation for developers and people who can write general help for users. We had hard work that day, we shared lunch and dinner at the office.

5th day

• In the morning Tiffany and Susanna did their presentation about technical writing. Developers attended and they gave them suggestions to improve the tutorial which includes languages like C, Java, Vala and Python.
• In the afternoon, we spent time together visiting Brno city and its museum.
• In the night I had to say good bye.

I want to thank all the GNOME Documentation team again and dedicate some words to Phil Bull, as my mentor he not only teach me how to do things for GNOME, he also teach every time I see him about the Free Software culture. Linux is not only in his computer, he keep the concept in his mind all the time. I know he lives with that every single day… Thanks Phil, I will keep trying.

This year “2012″ the first “face to face” meeting I will have with GNOME people is going to happen in Developer Conference 2012.  I am going to be part of the Hackfest Doc Sprint Brno 2012. My contribution will be related with writing and updating documentation.

My purpose is also get involved in technical writing and find some way to help the accessibility team.

La realidad al 2012, luego de dos períodos consecutivos del Sr. Heresi es A MI PARECER un caos por los alrededores de la casa de mis padres.  Algunas fotos que tomé, lo que AHORA es una pista con PARADEROS, era ANTES un PARQUE lleno de árboles y flores… Reitero lo que  es ahora, una avenida con ambulantes de periodicos, llenadores de combis que gritan todo el dia, vendedores de desayunos, hombres que orinan en plena avenida Venezuela sin ningún pudor. Se puede ver en las fotos que incluso hay botellas rotas junto a un arbol. La verdad es un peligro y la policia que siempre ronda esta hmmmm no sé para que está… Si sé para que está para evitar que les tome fotos, porque me detuvieron por estar tomando fotos en la calle sin razones, según ellos. Si no tenía mi DNI conmigo me detenían… la verdad no entiendo nada. Aquí algunas pics que logre salvar:

A diferencia de los paraderos del Callao, los cuales están pintados desde el tejado hasta los asientos, sin ningún ambulante y con faroles que alumbran cada dos metros cuadrados aprox., aparte de los postes. Por otro lado contrastando, se ve que el lado de San Miguel… bueno las fotos se describen solas…

Los policias al parecer están de acuerdo, incluso conversan con los ambulantes y llenadores sin problemas… y ven que están acumulando la basura los ambulantes en la esquina en pleno día y no se hace nada de nada. Lo último que quiero mostrar son las botellas cortadas, que estàn tiradas en la calle… quiero recalcar que todo lo que escribo es porque ya me canso tanta inseguridad en la zona donde vivo. Una vez mi hermanita fue victima de un asaltante con botella cortada y causo un trauma tremendo. Ademàs haber sido victimas de un asalto total en mi casa unos años atràs, cuando nos fuimos todos a un paseo familiar,  vacearon los tres pisos y aún no tenemos ninguna noticia… como si nada hubiera pasado. 

Quién nos podrá defender si no es nuestro propio alcade Salvador heresi, o es acaso gestión de la actual alcadesa Susana Villarán… en fin, no creo que ninguno de ellos nos pueda responder, mucho menos pagar todos los daños causados tanto material como psicológico.

1. Registering RSA

so, I had to generate a new one by doing:

* Because of the formatting thing I had to send a mail to the adminsys GNOME to validate my new ssh. After that, I followed the steps I did before.

2. Cloning baobab.

Since the application Disk Usage Analyzer is called the baobab project instead of being part of gnome-utils as it was before. I followed the instructions of the git.gnome.org page.

Empathy is an application that GNOME 3.2 has by default:

1. Click on the button + to Add your account on IRC.

2. Click on Protocol and choose IRC.

You can set your nickname, it is not necessarily enter a password.

3. Click on Network and choose irc.gnome.org. If you can not see it, click on Add.

4. Go to te Server block and click Add, by default the port 6667 is activate, if you have troubles ask to the administrator because some institutes and universities avoid it.

5. Click Close.

* Then, you can click on Network and you can see irc.gnome.org in the list.

*Click on Select and set your user, in my case I will be yulys

* Go to Empathy and click on the menu

Room > Join room

* You can put #gnome-women, #docs, #gnome-love or the channel you prefer.

Cuando entras por primera vez al aplicativo te pide configurar tus cuentas, sabemos que con Empathy podemos tener en una sola aplicación a todos nuestros contactos. Es así que hacemos click en la opción Edit > Account y luego comenzamos a elegir los protocolos correspondientes. En el caso de gtalk, colocas tu usuario y password y listo:

 Como se puede ver en el gráfico, se puede configurar las cuentas MSN, facebook, etc.

Ahora para poder configurar el room #gnome-women, sólo debo agregar el canal irc.gnome.org, y automáticamente se agregará el puerto correspondiente 6667 (algunas universidades o instituciones bloquean este puerto, verificar eso previamente).

PD: por experiencias previas, puedo decir que se queda pensando mientras intenta conectarse, el truco es cerrar y luego abrir otra vez para que puedas tener éxito d;

Solo teniamos dos chicas que decidieron instalar en sus laptops Ubuntu 11.10 con GNOME 3.2. Una de ellas realizo la particion correspondiente y la otra mas radical decidio deshacerse por completo de Windows. A ellas les dedico esta nota porque ahora se estan diviertiendo con el experimento “usabilidad de mi nuevo entorno de escritorio”

1. Quiero conectarme a Internet

La primera recomendacion que les quiero dar, es: usar la barra de busqueda de la interfaz:

* PD: en mi caso, instale GNOME 3.2 en ingles por eso realizo la busqueda en ingles

Elegir la opcion de SETTINGS Network, donde se tiene la opcion con cable, por wireless, y en caso se tenga un proxy en la red, se puede configurar manualmente, por defecto no tiene

* Aprovecho esta pantalla para mostrar el pop-up que sale cada vez que se monta un dispositivo en la maquina, sea este un usb, celular, camara de fotos o de video.

2. Donde esta el ” Gestor de paquetes” 

La opcion grafica esta en Applications > All > Ubuntu Software Center, la 2da opcion es  por barra de busqueda, colocar center; y por terminal digitar software-center y enter.

3. No encuentro la opcion “Apagar el sistema” 

Hacer click en la parte superior derecha donde aparece tu nombre > presionar la tecla ALT veras como cambia la opcion de Suspender a Apagar

4. Quiero mi msn 

En lugar del msn, se tiene la aplicacion Emphaty que ofrece no solo mensajeria instantanea para tus contactos de msn, tambien puedes configurar en una misma lista la agrupacion de los contactos del facebook, los contactos del gtalk e incluso personas que no tengas como contactos puedes incluirlas con bonjour.

Cuando inicias por primera vez este aplicativo te pedira configurar las cuentas que desees, pero si no lo haces o te quedaste a la mitad y lo cerraste, puedes ir a Preferencias para lograrlo. La ayuda para este y todos los aplicativos que vienen con GNOME 3.2 estan disponibles en ingles con tan solo presionar F1. Si tienes otro problema revisa aqui.

5. Personalizar mi teclado y lenguaje

Como se han dado cuenta, no escribo con tildes… es por el teclado que actualmente esta en ingles USA.

*Acabo de hacer el cambio desde la barra de búsqueda, escribiendo Key y aparece la opción KeyboardLayout, y selecciono el nuevo lenguaje. Utilizo de la barra inferior ^ para configurar:

6. Quiero poner un fondo de pantalla, ver aqui

7. No viene por defecto las combinaciones de teclas rápidas para lanzar app

En este caso no se requiere configurar la combinación ALT + F2, se requiere activarla presionando sobre la opcion que se muestra a continuación. Llegue ahí con el buscador:

8. No me gustan los popup de la mensajeria instantánea

Click sobre tu nombre y elijes la opción Notificaciones, que por defecto aparece en ON.

9. No viene con GIMP ni Cheese

Esta es mia, asi que para poder instalar por terminal (en modo superusuario) hacer:             apt-get install gimp y bueno para el cheese… eso sera tema de otro post

10. Las imágenes son muy grandes y me gusta el color azul

Este detalle fue percibido por un amigo al cual le gusta el color azul, que finalmente encontro esta página muy didáctica para minimizar los iconos de su escritorio.

* Finalmente como saber si estoy usando la version GNOME 3.2, esta la aprendi de mi amigo Cesar que le gusta que le digan Fabian :p   Applications > System Tools > System Monitor
